This post is part of a 12-part series, Building a Strong Startup Brand.

Welcome to the inaugural entry in our 12-article series designed specifically for startups eager to forge a powerful brand identity from the ground up. In today's dynamic business landscape, where every startup is vying for attention, establishing a distinctive brand is no longer just an option—it's necessary.

This series aims to educate, empower, and inspire by exploring the foundational aspects of brand building. We're not just here to guide; we're here to position you as a beacon of thought leadership in startup branding.

This first article explores the bedrock of any enduring brand: its core values and promise. These elements do more than just differentiate your startup; they connect you with your audience on a deeper level. We'll provide you with the high-level "Why" and the actionable "How" to establish and communicate these critical components. So, let's embark on this journey together, turning your vision into a brand that resonates and endures.

The Power of Core Values

Understanding Core Values

At the heart of every memorable brand lies a set of core values. These aren't just fancy buzzwords thrown around in board meetings; they are the essence of your brand's identity—the guiding principles that dictate every action and decision. Core values serve as a compass, ensuring your startup remains true to its mission and vision, regardless of the market's ebbs and flows.

Identifying Your Core Values

Finding the core values that genuinely represent your startup can be akin to soul-searching. It's a reflective process that requires looking inward and asking what matters most to you and your team. Here are some steps to help you identify your startup's core values:

  • Reflect on Your Mission and Vision
Begin by revisiting your startup's mission and vision. What drove you to start this journey? The answers can provide clues to your underlying values.
  • Consider the Impact You Want to Make
Think about the mark you want to leave on the world. Whether innovation, customer satisfaction, or sustainability, your desired impact can highlight your core values.
  • Engage Your Team in the Process
Your team's beliefs and passions can also illuminate your startup's values. Gather their insights through workshops or surveys to ensure your values are genuinely representative of your collective vision.

How We Did It

When we set out to define our Core Values at MTR Marketing, we involved the team at our annual planning meeting. We researched some companies that inspired us and looked at their published values, like the HubSpot Culture Code and other tech companies' core values. We are happy to share our own Core Values in the hopes that they inspire yours.

MTR Marketing's Core Values

  • Why-fy
We are those who start with why and simplify the how to achieve the what by when we promised.
  • Create an evolution

Adapt to change, stay in momentum, collaborate to progress, fail small, and learn big.

  • Do the right thing
Act with integrity and transparency, expect accountability and listen with empathy. Be respectable and trustworthy.
  • Encourage synergy
As a whole, we are greater than the sum of our parts because we transparently explore and connect about our diversity and unite in learning, communicating, and celebrating.
  • Prioritize what matters
We balance risk and reward, creativity and logic, quick wins and long-term success, smart work and silly fun. This is our way of growing harmoniously together.

Crafting Your Brand Promise

What is a Brand Promise?

A brand promise goes beyond slogans or taglines; it's a commitment you make to your customers. It encapsulates what customers can expect from your products or services and how it's different from the competition. A strong brand promise reflects the essence of your startup and the value you deliver, making it a crucial component of your brand identity.

Creating a Compelling Brand Promise

Crafting a brand promise that resonates with your audience involves introspection and creativity. Here's how to articulate a promise that sticks:

  • Align with Your Core Values
Your brand promise should be a natural extension of your core values. It should embody your startup's principles, ensuring authenticity in your commitment.
  • Ensure It's Clear, Simple, and Achievable
Complexity can dilute your message. Your brand promise should be straightforward, easy to understand, and, most importantly, something you can consistently deliver on.
  • Reflect on What Makes Your Startup Unique
Consider what sets your startup apart from the competition. Your brand promise should highlight your unique selling proposition, compelling customers to choose you.

Real-World Examples

Here are some brand promises from well-known companies that encapsulate their commitment to customers and differentiate them in the market:

  • Geico: Promises significant savings on car insurance in "15 minutes or less," emphasizing both efficiency and value.
  • BMW: Positions itself as "The Ultimate Driving Machine," underscoring the quality and performance of their vehicles.
  • Nike: Seeks "to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world," broadening its appeal by defining everyone with a body as an athlete.
  • Apple: "Think different." calls for innovation and individuality, reflecting the company’s approach to product design and customer experience.
  • Starbucks: Promises "to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time," focusing on community and individual customer care.
  • Walmart: "Save money. Live better." This promise combines the practical benefit of low prices with the higher aspiration of improving customers' lives.

Communicating Your Values and Promise

Integration into Branding and Marketing

With your core values and brand promise defined, the next step is weaving them into every aspect of your branding and marketing. This integration ensures your brand communicates a consistent and cohesive message across all touchpoints.

  • Strategies for Embedding Your Values and Promise
Use storytelling to bring your values and brand promise to life. Share customer success stories, behind-the-scenes looks at your company, and content showcasing how you deliver on your promise.
  • Consistency is Key
Whether on your website, social media, or packaging, ensure your values and brand promise are clearly reflected. This consistency builds recognition and trust with your audience.

Storytelling as a Tool

Narrative is a powerful tool to convey your startup's values and brand promise. Stories resonate with people emotionally, making your brand more relatable and memorable. Craft narratives around your startup's journey, the challenges you've overcome, and how your values and brand promise have guided your decisions and actions.

The Soul of your Brand: Core Values and Brand Promise

By clearly defining and effectively communicating these elements, you create a strong, resonant brand identity that attracts and retains loyal customers. As we move forward in this series, we'll explore leveraging these foundational pieces to build your startup's brand strategy.

Measuring Impact

Feedback Loops

Establishing robust feedback mechanisms ensures your brand's core values and brand promise resonate with your audience. This involves:

  • Customer Surveys and Interviews
Directly ask customers for feedback on how well your brand’s values and promises align with their experiences.
  • Social Media and Online Reviews
Monitoring these platforms for unsolicited customer feedback can provide unfiltered insights into your brand's perception.
  • Sales and Customer Support Interactions
Analyzing conversations for mentions of your brand's values or promises can highlight areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

Adjusting Your Approach

Based on the feedback collected, be prepared to refine your approach. This might involve:

  • Tweaking Your Brand's Core Values or Promise
If feedback indicates a misalignment with customer expectations or needs.
  • Enhancing Communication Strategies
To better articulate your brand's values and promises across various channels.
  • Improving Product or Service Offerings
Ensure they reflect and deliver on your brand's core values and brand promise more accurately.
